Chris Hayes Claims He Didn’t Get Arrested For Pot Because of White Privilege, “If I Was A Black Kid Instead of White Kid With Glasses My Ass Would’ve Been In A Squad Car”

MSNBC host Chris Hayes responded Friday to New York Times columnist David Brooks’ piece on why he doesn’t smoke pot anymore, delivering a powerful account of how race and luck helped him escape arrest at one of the biggest events in politics.
Hayes attended the 2000 Republican National Convention in Philadelphia, but not without a little bit of trouble at the security check-in. He inadvertently had a bag of weed in his luggage — one that despite being caught by the police, came with little consequence.
The MSNBC host predicted that in a best-case scenario, the cops thought he was a senator’s son — an incident with “a whole bunch of headaches” that they “did not need” on a night with greater security concerns.
“I can tell you as sure as I am sitting here before you that if I was a black kid with cornrows instead of a white kid with glasses, my ass would’ve been in a squad car faster than you can say George W. Bush,” Hayes remarked

Planned Parenthood Blames The Tea Party For 70 New Anti-Abortion Laws Passed In 22 States Last Year.

Some 22 states enacted 70 new provisions to target abortion last year, the second most ever, prompting an outcry from Planned Parenthood, which accused “out-of-touch Tea Party politicians” with using “every underhanded trick in the book to get these laws passed.”
A new report from the Guttmacher Institute said that the 70 provisions were second in number to the nearly 90 approved in 2011. The group said that 205 abortion restrictions were approved over the past three years, more than the 189 enacted during the previous decade.
The report also noted that many states increased access to abortion, such as California, but it was mostly critical of the more conservative states and efforts to reduce abortion.
Among the examples of “abortion restrictions” cited by the report were provisions by states to involve parents in the decision by a child to get an abortion, waiting periods, public funding and counseling.

Duck Dynasty “Strategy” Is To Appeal To “Misogynist, Racist, Anti-Gay” Right Wing.

We’ve got 11.8 million viewers tuning in for the premiere of season 4 Ladd. So this family earned $200,000 per episode that season and they represent and they speak to a large swath of the country. Primarily the stereotype almost that you just pointed out. But how do you try to combat that? Because, obviously they’re within their rights to go ahead and do this. This is all legal.
LADD EVERITT: Well, look, I mean I think the Robertson family is banking on being able to market firearms, you know, by issuing some of these very extreme political comments and hoping that it appeals to basically a swath of far right-wing Americans that they assume are their main customer base. I’m hoping that backfires. When you poll gun owners in this country, the fact is that the overwhelming majority of them are very moderate in their views. And I think many of them will not embrace the type of, you know, misogynist, racist, anti-gay comments that Phil Robertson is making. And my hope here is that this strategy, if it is indeed a strategy, will backfire on them.
