President Donald Trump, as commander in chief, ordered the CIA to stop funding the Syrian rebels a month ago, after consultation with CIA Director Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster.
The decision reflects Trump's argument that weapons sent to the Syrian rebels hands may fall into the hands of extremists.
“I’ve had an opposite view of many people regarding Syria,” Trump told the Wall Street Journal shortly after his election victory. ”My attitude was you’re fighting Syria, Syria is fighting ISIS, and you have to get rid of ISIS. Russia is now totally aligned with Syria, and now you have Iran, which is becoming powerful, because of us, is aligned with Syria. … Now we’re backing rebels against Syria, and we have no idea who these people are."
Additionally, because Syria President Bashar Assad essentially has a stranglehold on Syria, sending the rebels arms and aid could potentially result in the loss of millions of taxpayer dollars.
I stand by everything I wrote about McCain yesterday.
