Gov. Deval Patrick: Rep. Barney Frank would make a 'great interim senator' for Massachusetts

"What the hell, another tax and spend liberal. Why not? Bawney and Dodd should be in jail for what they did. Patrick your a disgrace as gov. for even thinking this is a good idea. Did Barry tell you it was? Come on MA. Haven't you done enough damage with Chief Sitting Bull-Shit Warren? The man who oversaw our Nations Mortgages go down the tubes, while telling his constituents there's nothing wrong with Fannie Mae? This is what you call "LEADERSHIP"? Fanny and Fweddie are fundamentawy sound! All I have to say is it takes a lot of balls to even think this is a good idea. Seems to me it's more like more bullshit from the Democrats. Frank is over 70. He's old and tired and needs to enjoy his last ten years or so. That is what his boyfriend says too. They want to spend some quality time together. So let them." MC

BOSTON — Gov. Deval L. Patrick said that retired U.S. Rep. Barney Frank is a gifted legislator and would make a great interim senator.

"He is definitely on the list," Patrick told reporters Friday. "I think he would be a great interim senator."
Patrick's comments came at a Statehouse press conference after Frank, a Newton Democrat, told MSNBC
that he wants the governor to appoint him as an interim replacement for U.S. Sen. John F. Kerry. President Barack Obama has nominated Kerry to be secretary of state.

Responding to a reporter's question, Patrick said it would be logical to appoint Frank, partly because he knows the issues in Washington and could hit the ground running.

Patrick, a Democrat, must fill Kerry's seat with an interim appointment. Under state law, a special election for Kerry's seat will be held between 145 days and 160 days after Kerry's resignation.
Patrick has said he expects the interim appointee won't run in the special election. Frank said he doesn't want the job for the long term.

Patrick said he spoke to Frank on Thursday. Patrick said he would keep details of the conversation confidential, as he has with other possible temporary appointees. Of the possible candidates he has spoken with, Patrick said, Frank is the only one who has gone public.

"Does it matter in the case of Congressman Frank what I would have preferred?" Patrick said, smiling.
